Flag of the village of Thorn in the munincipality of Maasgouw. Thorn was previously a swamp in Roman occupied Nederland and a Benedictine nunnery in the 900s. after the 12 centuary the area created a government and formed the smallest sovereign principality within the Holy Roman Empire which was around 250 square meters. After the french invasion of the Netherlands, Thorn was annexed by the French and later became a munincipality of the United Kingdom of The Netherlands.
Flag of the village of Stevensweert in the munincipality of Maasgouw, originally located on an island in the Meuse which was used as a fortress by the Spanish in 1633. Stevensweert was also a part of the Holy Roman Empire in the Duchy of Guelders before being conquered by the Dutch Republic in 1702. Home to the tallest windmill in Limburg, a very respectable fact i guess i dont know.
Former flag of the city of Sittard in the munincipality of Sittard-Geleen, an acient city founded in 850 A.D. as well as earlier settlements dating back to 5000 B.C.after being granted city right by the Duke of Limburg and in 1400 was sold to the Duchy of Jülich in the Holy Roman Empire and was kept until 1794. Sittard was occupied by the french from 1794 to 1814 untill it joined the United Kingdoms of The Netherlands, although breifly joining the Belgian revolution between 1830 to 1839. During the second world war numerous smaller cities were incorporated into Sittard by the German forces until eventually being liberated by the American forces.
